07 BAMBERG

A disarmingly beautiful architectural masterpiece with an almost complete absence of modern eyesores, Bamberg’s entire Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Bavaria’s unmissables. Generally regarded as one of Germany’s most attractive settlements, the town is bisected by rivers and canals and was built on seven hills, earning it the inevitable nickname of ‘Franconian Rome’. Make your way across its bridges and along the narrow medieval streets to the gaggle of hilltop sights, beginning with the Neue Residenz (New Residence). This splendid episcopal palace gives you an eyeful of the lavish lifestyle of Bamberg’s prince-bishops who, between 1703 and 1802, occupied its 40-odd rooms. Nearby rises the Bamberger Dom (erzbistum-bamberg.de), a cathedral packed with artistic treasures, most famously the life-size equestrian statue of the Bamberger Reiter (Bamberg Horseman), whose true identity remains a mystery.

THE DRIVE

The B73 is your road today as you head 53km north to Coburg. Along the way you pass through Lichtenfels, a small town renowned for its basket-weaving traditions and its commanding baroque basilica visible for miles around.
